“Like floating on a color-changing, sparkling soap bubble...”
FAB Bench is a design I created for The Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition 2022. It was inspired by the venue’s original function as a central laundry and by the lightness and shifting colors of a soap bubble.
The visually floating bench is made of dichroic glass, which changes color and expression depending on the light that hits it and the angle from which it is viewed. As you move around the bench, its character and expression evolve, offering a dynamic, ever-changing experience. With its aesthetic color and intensity, the bench constantly transforms, gracefully occupying any space and becoming both an eye-catcher and an object of contemplation.
FAB Bench explores the refraction of light, reflections, and spatiality in a functional design that is always shifting.
“The visually floating bench is made of dichroic glass with optical properties that change color and expression depending on the light that strikes the bench and the angle from which it is viewed.”
“Certain wavelengths will penetrate the surface, creating beautiful, color-intense shadows, while others will be reflected off the surface, bouncing light back in a different color.”
